Munising Bay Arts Fest this Saturday

Just a quick reminder that there's fun to be had at Bayshore Park in Munising tomorrow!

Cheap Eat'n: Mickey Lu's

Cheap Eat'n
Since I live in the Green Bay area and travel back and forth to the U.P. often, I've found myself at various restaurants along the way. All of these have two things in common: quick and cheap. How coincindental! Every week Great Lakes Clipper review restaurants with these same qualities.
For those of you who are familiar with the trek on U.S. 41 between Green Bay and Escanaba, it is likely that you've seen, if not stopped, at our latest Cheap Eat'n location- Mickey-Lu's- BBQ in Marinette!
Mickey-Lu's has been around for almost 70 years. It's a tiny white building with a large "EAT" sign stuffed between the railroad tracks and the busy highway. Not much has changed inside. A creaky door leads diners into a restaurant with about six tables and a counter. It has been described many times over as nostalgic.
Behind the counter, owner Chuck Finnessy, is busy using a charcoal grill to serve up some of the best burgers around. These burgers are special. They are served on a grilled roll with ketchup, onion, pickles and a pat of butter which melts all over the place.
Oh, and did I mention that the burgers are pocket pleasing as well? That's right, at my last check, a burger costs just $1.80!
Keep in mind that Mickey-Lu's does not have a fryer so don't expect fries with that. But you can get delicious hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, shakes, malts and sundaes.
Also, if you are fond of brandishing a credit card, it won't work at Mickey-Lu's. Cash only please.

So why not feed both needs by shopping at the HUGE Rummage Sale for UPAWS?

De Pere Yoga in the Park

I've never done yoga but I think this summer might be the time to try it. My husband just bought me a new yoga mat at Menard's (of all places) last week so I've got the equipment, now I just need the mental inspiration.
Here's something that might help: Yoga in the Park in De Pere. Each Thursday throughout the summer from 6:00- 7:00 p.m., Definitely De Pere and Flog Yoga Studio is sponsoring a Yoga in the Park event in Voyageur Park.
They say this FREE, outdoor yoga class is perfect for all levels. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat and water bottle.
In case of rain, the free class will be moved to Flow Yoga Studio at 421 George St. in De Pere. Space is limited to 25 participants in the indoor class.

Shipwrecks

It's been hard to watch the local news lately without hearing about newly discovered Great Lakes shipwrecks. We, here at Great Lakes Clipper, would be re-miss if we didn't do our part to celebrate these local historic discoveries.

First off, Lake Superior recently uncovered her secret of where the Henry B. Smith freighter went down off the coast of Marquette almost 100 years ago. This freighter was discovered a little more than 500 feet from Marquette

Our other Great Lake, Lake Michigan also may have given up the mystery of an even older shipwreck, Le Griffin. Le Griffin was a 17th century ship which sank after leaving Washington Island with French explorer Rene Robert LaSalle aboard. A 19- foot beam was discovered in the early 2000's and after legal wrangling, including that with French authorities, shipwreck hunters finally got the chance this week to determine if it truly is part of the Le Griffin. This beam is just off the coast of the Garden Peninsula in Fairport, Mich.. Unfortunately, lake conditions and technical difficulties caused delays for the shipwreck hunters and they ran out of time before their state permit expired.

If you can't get enough of Great Lakes shipwrecks, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Paradise, Mich. in the Eastern U.P. is the place for you. On Whitefish Point, it is the site of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the storied boat which sank in the early 1970's after a November gale.
Tonight at 7 p.m.,  the Museum is holding a special presentation called "Tragedy and Triumph on the Shipwreck Coast." Learn about vessels such as the Jupiter and Saturn which went down in Lake Superior in November 1872, leading to the creation of four Life-Saving Stations along the Superior coast. This is part of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society's Maritime Speaker series. Museum Director Bruce Lynn will lead the discussion. Admission is FREE to members and just $5 for the general public.
Visit www.shipwreckmuseum.com for more information.

Appleton Juneteenth Celebration

Celebrate diversity and good food in Appleton this Sunday at the Appleton Juneteenth Festival.
From 1 p.m.- 6 p.m., City Park on Franklin St. in Downtown Appleton will be home to a FREE festival featuring an acrobatic show with the Jesse White Tumbling Team, the Chicago Unity Band Unified Soul Band, a children's village and food and retail vendors.
This celebration is made possible by African Heritage, Inc, the City of Appleton and many sponsoring local businesses. The Children's Village will have storytelling, games, arts and crafts.
Juneteenth is a remembrance of the end of slavery in the United States. This year's celebration is particularly special being that it is the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Check out Facebook for more information.

Cheap Eatn': Clyde's

Cheap Eat'n

This week's selection for the Great Lakes Clipper Cheap Eat'n restaurant review has been an institution for great treats in the Eastern U.P. for over 40 years. Clyde's Drive-In has been open since 1969 with locations in St. Ignace, Manistique and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
For many downstate Michiganders, Clyde's in St. Ignace (just off US 2) is the first mandatory vacation stop after crossing the Mackinac Bridge. It is a true drive-in with car hop service and only a few booths and stools inside. The red tray mounted on your car window is a symbolic reminder that summer is here, even if you have to roll up the window to stay warm or avoid pesky mosquitoes in your car .
The Sault location is on Riverview Ave. just off the beaten path of tourist-lined streets and locks and has a great view of Sugar Island. Sea gulls entertain customers as they land on car hoods and feed on left-over french fries.
The Manistique location, on Chippewa Ave. the only one open year-round, is less tourist-oriented and more of a secret of locals. It is right next store to Manistique Papers so it tends to be a factory-worker's burger oasis.
I've been to all three locations over the last 30 plus years and have never been disappointed no matter what I've ordered. Delicious burgers reign here. My favorite is the Pizza Burger which isn't what you'd typically get elsewhere. It is a pizza burger patty but instead of the marinara sauce, Clyde's puts whatever burger toppings  you want- ketchup, mayo, or even lettuce. Sounds strange but mayo and lettuce on a Clyde's pizza burger is delish. My husband loves their Olive Burger. He's also enjoyed Clyde's famous "Big C". This is the famous burger that has long been considered the "best burger in the U.P." These burgers are made with 100 percent ground beef. I've also been impressed by their pasties. Their cheese curds and fries (with gravy) are fantastic.
What's amazing is that even with throngs of tourists, Clyde's is always fast and cheap.
Check out their FaceBook page to view a menu.

Cheap Eat'n: Al's Hamburger, Green Bay, WI

Cheap Eat'n

Check in each week for Cheap Eat'n, the Great Lakes Clipper restaurant review. We'll feature one restaurant a week from either Northeastern Wisconsin or the Upper Peninsula. Each restaurant we pick must be 1.) Friendly to your wallet and 2.) Really tasty.

With so many great restaurants that fit into both categories, it took me awhile to choose which one I'd feature first. But I decided to go with one of the oldest... Al's Hamburger's in downtown Green Bay.

I'll admit it. I lived in Green Bay for four years without even knowing that Al's existed. And I think that's the case for a lot of people. It's so small that if you get distracted on your way into the Meyer Theater a few doors down on Washington St, you'd miss it the big blue "EAT" sign. But that's okay. It's part of Al's charm.

Al's Hamburgers has been around since 1934. Yes, folks, that's before Vince Lombardi and friends ruled Green Bay and sidled up to Al's counter. My husband's grandparents ate at Al's as teenagers.  My in-laws ate at Al's as teenagers. My husband ate at Al's as a teenager. Al's is a true Green Bay tradition that only the locals know about. That's why when Al's burned down in 2011, there were many customers praying to the hamburger gods for a comeback.  And in 2012, they did with the same burgers, curds and onion rings that Grandma used to eat.

If you are the quinoa and flax seed type, I'm guessing this is not the place for you. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called Al's "the definition of a greasy spoon". My sentiments exactly. There are only a few booths and from the looks of the outside, you'd probably think twice before entering. But the scent of steamed burgers and fried onions pulls you in like a Siren.

So what makes Al's so special?

First of all, the breakfast. For less than $15, two people can chow down on huge plates of eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, juice, and my husband's favorite, hash. Downtown office workers can start their day with Al's at 5 a.m.

And from the name of the restaurant, you can probably guess what the other must-have food is- hamburgers. Watch as your waitress throws your hamburger patty down on the grill alongside strings of caramelized onions and steams your bun. Be sure to pair it with onion rings or cheese curds. Pure perfection and totally worth the calories!

If you don't eat beef, that's okay. Al's also offers soups, lunch plate specials (meat, potato, vegetable and bread for $5.95), chicken and pork chops.  Just be sure to get to Al's before 3 p.m. when they close.

Check out their Facebook page.

Finn Fest

I've heard the U.P. referred to as "the land of a thousand Makis", referring to the huge Finnish population. This is only a slight exaggeration. There are many residents with last names like Laurila, Hautala, Nakkula, Toivanen and Etlamaki.  It is true that the Central U.P and Copper Country have one of the highest poplulations of Finns outside of Finland. So what better place to host FinnFest USA 2013 and truly celebrate what it means to be Finnish?

FinnFest is 30 years old this year and has grown over the years to attract up to 10,000 people from all around the world.
Hancock is playing host this year to greet visitors with "sisu" (welcome) from June 19- 23.
The $30 per day fee is well worth the price with a huge number of activities each day. Activities include courses in nordic walking and education in Finland, geneology consults, dances, accordian concerts, kantele concerts, cooking demonstrations, a youth mini language camp, films, sing alongs, a quilt raffle, a Tori market and much, much more.
Check out the FinnFest 2013 website for more information.

Gone Country

Get your cowboy hats on for several U.P. and Northeastern Wisconsin events this weekend- the Hulbert Country Music Festival, the Great Lakes Rodeo and the Mackville Tractor Pull.

If you've ever traveled on M-28 between Newberry and Sault Ste. Marie, you've gone through Hulbert. This week (today through Sunday), the town is home to the 7th Annual Hulbert Country Music Festival. This FREE festival features musicians and singers from throughout the state, food concessions, a flag retirement ceremony, a fish fry and Gospel music on Sunday morning. All event swill be at the American Legion Post 393 at 37661 West 5th St. in Hulbert.

The Marquette County Fairground in Sands Township is home to the Great Lakes Rodeo tomorrow (6/14) through Sunday (6/16). Watch the best in U.P. rodeo, horsemanship competitions and even attend a barn dance. Advance tickets for adults are $10 or $5 for children. These can be purchased at the Lake Superior Partnership office, the Ishpeming Negaunee Chamber of Commerce office or the A.M. Express in Escanaba. Tickets can be also purchased at the gate for $12 for adults and $6 for children. Camping and weekend passes are available.

I can hear the VROOM! of trucks and tractors from here. Mackville (just a bit northwest of Appleton) is home to the Mackville Tractor Pull this weekend. The event has an admission fee on Friday and Saturday but Sunday is Family Day which means it is FREE. There will be a polka mass, farm pull at Noon, carnival rides and games, live entertainment and a chicken dinner. All events take place at St. Edward Parish.

And don't forget to shine up your boots for the biggest stars of country music.  Country USA (NOT a bargain by any stretch of the imagination) is coming up in Oshkosh, starting June 25th.

A Great Lakes Football Summertime Rivelry

We all know that Green Bay is home to the highest paid quarterback in NFL history but did you know that Green Bay has a football franchise where players play just for the fun of it?
No, I'm not talking about the Packers or the indoor football Blizzard. I'm talking about the Green Bay Grizzlies. They are new this year and are based out of Howard. They are a semi-pro team with the slogan "made by the players, for the players."
Here's another question. Did you know that the U.P. has a football team? Yup, they are called the U.P. Arctic Blast. They play from May through August on various fields throughout the U.P. (Norway, Powers and practices in Kingsford.)
These two teams played one another this past weekend and I'm afraid to say that the Grizzlies made fine work out of the Arctic Blast team on home turf.
It's all for the love of the game though, right? Fans get to watch football in June and July without having to pay a big price. Grizzlies games are just $5 for adults, $3 for students and free for ages 5 and younger.  Concessions and team gear are available at the games.
Here is a link to the Grizzlies schedule.
If you're in the U.P., here is a link to the Arctic Blast's schedule.

Wonderful rhubarb

My fingers are raw from cutting rhubarb all weekend! My mother-in-law, Carole, has a crop of rhubarb that won't quit every year and Brain and I reap the benefits (and sore fingers) from it. It's just been in the last few years that this city girl has discovered the wonderful world of rhubarb. I love that it freezes so well.
Most people think of rhubarb simply for early summer pies or cakes. Some use rhubarb for glazes to put over pork or chicken. Some eat it directly out of the garden with a bowl of sugar for the pucker.
I go simple and very, very cheap with our sudden pleathora of the ruby stalks. I make jam- without the complicated canning process. It lasts in the fridge for a couple of weeks (although it usually gets eaten before then!)
For less than 25 cents per jar, I've made Rhubarb Cherry Jam, Rhubarb Strawberry Jam and most recently Rhubarb Raspberry Jam. How do I do it? Here's the recipe:

Rhubarb Jam
5 cups rhubarb chopped
3 1/2 cups sugar
3 Tblsp. water
1 6 oz. package of your favorite flavored gelatin (I use store brand for 33 cents a box)

Dilute the sugar in the water. Add the rhubarb and boil until the rhubarb becomes soft (about 5 minutes). Stir well. Add in the gelatin and continue to stir. Cook for about 3 minutes. Take off the burner and pour into the container of choice. (I use old jelly jars or margarine tubs.) Refrigerate. This makes three jelly jars worth of jam.

Inexpensive gift ideas for Dad

My dad has been gone for thirteen years now but since being married I've resumed the quest for the perfect Father's Day gift for my father-in-law.
This year my father-in-law is getting a special polo shirt that he has hinted at for the last few years. So, essentially, the quest this year was easy. However, in the past I've had to consider what to get the man who truly has everything. And how do you get a special gift (no ties, no tools) without paying very much?
Here are a few "out of the box" ideas that may work for your dad/husband/father-in-law...

1. Fishing license for either your own state or a neighboring state
2. A furry friend from a local Humane Society (only if Dad would really want one though)
3. An exotic overnight stay in a tepee or yurt. The Michigan DNR rents out tepees, yurts, and cabins in various State Parks. A few years ago, I bought a two-night stay in a real tepee in Cheboygan State Park downstate for only $75. Despite being an authentically made tepee, it had electricity! I know that tepees are also available in Baraga and yurts in the Porcupine Mountains. Wisconsin State Parks also have tepees available at Devil's Lake and Kohler-Andrae State Parks.
4. Learn from the experts about Beer, Cheese and Football. (Okay, disclaimer here. This is totally self-serving but it's about a cool event that many dads would like.) St. Norbert College Language Services is offering a series of workshops in July and August about Beer-making, Cheese-making and Football in Northeastern Wisconsin for $30 a class or $90 for the whole series. Check out the website at www.snc.edu/languageservices/culturalclasses/football.html for more information.
5. Thunder on the Lakeshore- Why not treat dad to a day of mechanical birds? This weekend Manitowoc welcomes visitors to experience a phenomenal airshow. Gates open at 8 a.m. both days. Admission is $6 in advance (can be purchased at Kwik-Trip locations) or $10 at the gate with kids 5 and under being free. Activities include sunrise balloon launches, an EAA Pancake Breakfast, K-9 police dog demonstrations, a Warbird flight review, historical displays and exhibits, entertainment, airplane and helicopter rides as well as a hot-air balloon event on Sunday night.
6. Admission to Dad's favorite museum or attraction. Our area is full of great attractions that Dad might like to visit. If he likes trains, take him to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay. If he likes motorcycles, take him to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. Or maybe he likes boats? Take him to the Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay, the submarine in Manitowoc or the Shipwreck Museum in Paradise, Michigan.
7. For all Wisconsin and U.P. outdoorsy dads... don't forget that Cabela's is opening a brand new store within steps of Lambeau Field next month. A gift certificate to the sporting goods behemoth might be right up Dad's alley.

You're a Grand Old Flag!

When I first moved to Appleton back in 2003, I discovered a great family-friendly event- the Appleton Flag Day Parade. For those of you who have seen the Appleton Christmas Parade, you know what a good job the city does putting on a parade.
Tomorrow, Saturday, June 8th marks the 63rd time that Appleton has put on a parade for Flag Day. This year is a special one, marking the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. Special tribute is being made to those Korean War veterans.
Over 100 units will be adorned with patriotic decor- from military units to marching bands to scout troops and more. Members of the UW Marching band will be there, as will the UW Bucky Wagon. Free American flags will be handed out about an hour before the parade starts.
What a wonderful, FREE family outing!
The parade starts at 2 pm and travels along College Ave. in downtown Appleton.

U.P. kids can take flight for free

Do your kids dream of flying? Perhaps they'd like to try for free.
The Lake Superior Chapter 850 of the Experimental Aircraft Assoication will offer registration for free airplane flights tomorrow for kids ages 8- 17 from 10- 11:30 am at the Sawyer Airport General Aviation Terminal.
That terminal is located about a mile south of the passenger terminal. Flights last about 30 minutes and are offered through the Young Eagles program.
Please note that parents or legal guardians must complete a permission form before the flight.
Pilots will also teach kids how airplanes work. After the flight, each youth will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle and their name will be added to a list on display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Young Eagle status will also allow the youth to complete a free online Flight Training course offered by Sporty's.

Mackinac Island blossoms and buffets

While the U.P. can't claim Mackinac Island entirely for its own, the Island is close and has enough U.P. ties to be considered part of the Yooper family. If you've been there, you know the Island's charms of horses, the Grand Hotel and the world-famous fudge shops. This time of year though, the Island's biggest attraction is one that is more fragrant than the horses, a lot less expensive than the Grand Hotel and doesn't pack on the pounds like the fudge- it is the Mackinac Island Lilac Festival. Mackinac's lilac collection begin in 1949 to co-incide with a great horse drawn parade. What began as a one-day event now spans 10 days and it starts this Friday. From June 7- 16, the festival draws visitors from all around the world for island tours, art exhibitions by local painters, buffets and afternoon teas at the Grand Hotel, wine tasting, musical entertainment, hayrides, a 10K run, shoreline cruises, the Lilac Festival Grande Parade and much more.
If you are a foodie, perhaps you'd be interested in the 27th Annual A Taste of Mackinac for only $15. It runs on Sat., June 15 from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. at the Harbor View Inn.
Or perhaps Dad would like to spend Sunday, June 16, Father's Day as a Captain for a Day. Shepler's will teach what it itakes to be a Captain on the Great Lakes with hands-on activities, such as, knot tying, navigation through charting and tours of the Pilot House and Engine room. You will also be treated to a short cruise of the harbor. The best part is that it is free! It will be held on the Sacre Bleu, docked at the end of Shepler's Mackinac Island Main Dock.

Waterboard Warriors

While the Waterboard Warriors Water Ski Show got washed out and cancelled last night, there are a lot of opportunities to see them throughout the summer.
Every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer (weather dependant), the Waterboard Warriors put on a free water ski show at Mueller Park in Wrightstown. This includes high speed barefoot water skiing, jumping and pyramids. Free shows begin at 7 p.m. in June and 6:30 p.m. in July and August. They also have a free Learn to Ski clinic at 6 p.m. on June 26 and August 12.

The U.P. can boast of over 1,700 miles of shoreline, 4,300 inland lakes and 12,000 miles of rivers and streams within its borders. This is the weekend to take advantage of all that water- and all those fish under the waves.
It is Michigan's annual Summer Free Fishing Weekend on June 8 and 9. During Free Fishing Weekend all license fees are waived for both Michigan residents and out-of-staters alike.
