Art on the Rocks

The last weekend of July was always one of my most favorite weekends of the year when I lived in Marquette.

There was one reason for that- Art on the Rocks.

This Saturday and Sunday, Marquette is showing it's "true colors" for the 55th year in a row. No longer located at Presque Isle, Art on the Rocks has been held at Mattson Lower Harbor Park for the last few years.

Despite the move, it still offers some of the best paintings, pottery, stained glass, metal works and photography in the country. It is more on the end of fine art, than crafts, as it is a juried show. There are 175 artists and more than 10,000 people are expected to peruse and purchase their wares.

For people like me, Art on the Rocks is more about getting ideas and dreaming about "when I win the lotto" than making large purchases.

Art on the Rocks runs from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday.

While you are in the artsy mode, don't forget about the Outback Art Fair. Just down Lakeshore Blvd. at Picnic Rocks, Outback is a little less "fine art" and more crafty. There's wood works, paintings, stained glass, food vendors, jewelery and fun "I really didn't need this, but it's really cool" kind of items.

Downtown Marquette Blueberry Fest

It's cool to "feel BLUE" today in Downtown Marquette.

Head down to the corner of Washington and Front Streets today before 7 p.m. to check out the Downtown Marquette BLUEberry Festival.

Take advantage of downtown retailers' "BLUE specials". There are sidewalk sales, food vendors, artists, demonstrations, kids activities and even pony rides.

Craving everything BLUEberry? Try some BLUEberry beer or (here's a new one) BLUEberry pizza. Not to mention, pints and quarts of the delicious little berry are available for purchase in droves.

Musical acts include local favorites Jim & Ray (on stage right now), Les Ross, Conga Se Menne and the Flat Broke BLUES Band. The event is FREE.

Cabela's Opening

Just a quick word about the biggest story in Northeast Wisconsin/ U.P. retail this week- the opening of the new Cabela's store. Yesterday, thousands of people stood in line (and some camped out) to be the first inside the new outdoor chain store on Lombardi Ave. I haven't been there yet myself but am very excited to check out their camping department and "Bargain Cave." There's even a deli, museum area and aquarium!

Polar Express Tickets go on sale

We got it! Hot chocolate!... Okay, so maybe today isn't the best day to be singing the praises of a warm drink of cocoa but it is the day to get those Smartphones and computers ready to purchase tickets for the National Railroad Museum's Polar Express Event. Tickets go on sale TODAY and you have to get them quick because they sell out quickly.
Premium tickets are $27.50 per person (ride on the train with Santa!). Regularly priced tickets are $16.50 for adults and $14 for kids. Children under 1 year old are free. While initially this seems pricey, this is a very special holiday tradition for many families in the area.
Here are the dates: November 29, 30, December 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. Experience the story on a real train (The Polar Express of course) to the North Pole and back. Snack on cookies and hot chocolate. Listen to The Polar Express and dance with merry elves. See Santa. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Tall Ships Marquette

Multicultural Children's Fest

Don't forget to check out the Multicultural Children and Family Festival tomorrow from 11:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. in Green Bay's St. James Park at 700 S. Monroe St.
Enjoy FREE multicultural music, dancing, crafts, games and food. This event is sponsored by the Multicultural Center of Green Bay.
I attended this event a few years back and it was excellent. Kids enjoy it because many of the activities are put on by their peers. It's a fantastic way of celebrating their own culture and teaching children about cultures different than their own.

Cheap Eat'n: The Greenbrier Cafe', Aurora Baycare

Cheap Eat'n

Want to get ham, broccoli and cheddar quiche and a side of fruit for $3? Or maybe you'd like a Smoked Turkey sandwich with cranberry mayo on two slices of cranberry bread with a side of watermelon for $4. Those are just a few of the yummy items on the menu at The Greenbrier Cafe.

Okay, I'll admit it. You probably think I'm crazy for doing a restaurant review of a hospital cafeteria. Most people think of tasteless, sub-par food served in a dank basement filled with sick and sad people when thinking of hospital cafeterias. I know I always did. But this isn't just any hospital cafeteria.
The Greenbrier Cafe at Aurora Baycare Medical Center in Green Bay actually has a following outside of the typical hospital staff/visitor clientele. Students from nearby Preble High School flock at lunchtime to chow down on The Greenbrier's tasty burgers, wraps and fries. Groups of businessmen enjoy sandwiches outside on the patio while taking advantage of the free WiFi. Families gather alongside doctors and nurses to snack on delicious desserts.
Besides a considerable number of people dressed in scrubs, you don't even realize you are in a hospital. The atmosphere is light and airy. There is a separate entrance for the cafeteria so you don't have to worry about hospital parking or walking through long hallways.
The Greenbrier opens daily at 7 a.m. and is open until 6:30 p.m. and then again from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. They serve a main entree each day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A grill and sandwich station is open throughout the day. They also have a great soup and salad bar, dessert bar, and a wide variety of beverages.
As my husband has (unfortunately) spent a lot of quality time on the medical side of the hospital in the last several years, I've eaten in the Greenbrier quite a bit. The subs and sandwiches are great and inexpensive. My favorite thing to get is a large ham, turkey and cheese croissant with chopped cukes and shredded carrots for only $3. The soups taste homemade. The salad bar is fresh and has a ton of variety. They also have really good cauliflower bites, chicken strips and cheese curds. Breakfast is yummy with scrambled eggs by the scoopful, bacon ,sausage, and hash browns.

Cheap Eat'n: Whitefish Inn of Curtis, Mich.

Cheap Eat'n

This week's restaurant selection for Cheap Eat'n takes us to a little place with a fantastic waterfront view and great bar food in Curtis, Michigan.
Curtis, perhaps best known for the "biggest little parade in the U.P." for the Fourth of July or home of the Fish & Hunt Shop, is tucked between Big Manistique Lake and South Manistique Lake in the Eastern U.P. The Whitefish Inn, in downtown Curtis, is well worth the 40 minute drive from Manistique or Tahquamenon Falls.
I'll be honest. If you read the online reviews of this place, you probably wouldn't go there. Customers claim they've had slow service and that the atmosphere is dark.
But my experience of being there several times over the last several years is one completely contrary to what's out there in cyberspace. Perhaps new management has something to do with it.
Customer service has always been good when I've visited. I think perhaps whoever wrote about the slow service was a City Mouse and didn't really understand U.P. "take-it-easy" culture.
As for a dark atmosphere, obviously the online reviewer didn't look out the sliding doors at the gorgeous South Manistique Lake views. Customers may choose to eat outside overlooking the lake on the patio.
In the winter, customers can cozy up to the fireplace or watch the game on one of the several TVs. Last November, my husband and I soaked up the Packers/Lions rivalry as we snacked on appetizers.
Have the kids along? They can play ping-pong or pool or listen to the juke box while waiting for your order.
I have found that the Whitefish Inn is the perfect Curtis restaurant experience, giving out-of-town visitors a chance to interact with locals while chowing down on luscious burgers and fries, some of the BEST perch and whitefish caught locally, good Mexican entrees and a local favorite- whitefish dip with chips.
And did I mention the prices? They are very good at giving a lot of food for very little money. On a trip there last week, my husband and I ordered a bowl of steaming hot chili, two large iced teas, a HUGE wet burrito smothered in cheese, and a lightly-breaded perch sandwich and fries basket. It came to just under $25. We both were very full by the time we left.

Cheap Eat'n: Taco Burrito Mexico

For the last several Cheap Eat'n installments, I've gone with a few of my favorite burger spots. This week, however, I thought I'd spice it up a bit for those of you who are a bit tired of burgers after the Fourth of July. Maracas, please! It's Taco Burrito Mexico in Green Bay.

Despite having several locations in Green Bay, Taco Burrito Mexico tends to float under the radar. This is probably because it doesn't advertise or make coupons available like some of the other Mexican restaurants in the area do. But, this place doesn't need coupons to draw people in. Their fresh, authentic food does that. Tacos, burritos, tortas, breakfast, and Mexican colas and beers make this one of Green Bay's mexican cooking gems.

Taco Burrito Mexico restaurants are located on E. Mason St., Oakland Ave. (old Storheim's building near Green Bay West High School) and the newest location at 238 S. Webster Ave., between the hospital district and Downtown Green Bay.

Whether it's the Latin American soccer on TV, the sizzle of the steak on the grill, or the vivid Mexican murals on the wall, Taco Burrito Mexico transports you out of Green Bay to the heart of Mexico. Choose to eat in or carry out.

While you are waiting for your food, feast on complimentary chips and FRESH homemade salsa. Tacos, available with steak, chicken, chorizo or vegetarian, are only $1.75. That is comparable with Taco Bell but SOO much better. The burritos are HUGE and are available with whatever ingredients you want. Quesadillas, tortas, and chimichangas are also available with sides of rice and beans. For the adventuresome, you can try menudo (cow's stomach), horchata (a drink made with rice and milk), or one of their yummy desserts.

My go-to is the chicken taco, chips and salsa and a strawberry (fresa) Jarritos. YUM! If I ever moved out of the Green Bay area, Taco Burrito Mexico is definitely one of the places I'd miss.
