No fleas, but frugal finds!

My husband is quite a collector- trains, airplanes, RC cars and antique anything. A few weeks back we bought a sewing machine from the 1800s at a Door County antique mall. Needless to say, my frugality set in and we got quite the deal.
For years I've been very curious about the ads in the paper for the Antigo and Shawano Flea Markets. I'm going to make it my goal this summer to get to one or both of them.
Every Sunday, April through October, there is an outdoor flea market at the Shawano County Fairgrounds (990 E Green Bay St., Shawano). Admission is only $2 and you can peruse from 7 am- 4 pm. Make a day of some old time retail therapy!
If you are "Up North" in Antigo, stop by the Langlade County Fairgrounds from 7 am- 4 pm on the following dates for the Antigo Flea Market: Tomorrow (June 1), July 4 & 5 and Aug. 3. A $2 admission fee is charged.

Fresh, local, green and yummy!

Tomorrow is a day that I dream of all winter-long. It is the start of my favorite farmer's market. I will begin my foray into the wild and wonderful world of fresh fruits and veggies, warm bowls of booyah and that extra plant for my backyard garden.
Downtown Green Bay and Olde Main Street are kicking off the 2013 season with an opening bell ceremony starting at 6:55 a.m. tomorrow June 1 near the corner of Quincy and Pine Streets in downtown Green Bay. The market, which runs through the end of October, features over 100 vendors, live music, yummy treats like booyah, kettle korn and pies, and parking is FREE. Another cool freebie that attendees may remember from last year- free BayCare Health tote bags to carry all of your purchases.
If you can't make it to the Farmer's Market tomorrow, Northeast Wisconsin offers you all kinds of opportunities to become a localovore.

Did you know that June is Dairy Month? For many Wisconsinites that means a hearty breakfast at one of the many Breakfasts on the Farm held throughout the state to celebrate the dairy industry. Culinary offerings and family activities vary from farm to farm. So do the prices and times. Some farms feature tractor rides, face painting and even petting zoos. But one thing they all have in common is great local down-home food.

Here's a listing of the upcoming Breakfasts on the Farm in Northeastern Wisconsin:

Canoe & Wilderness Camp

While the feminist in me thinks that this is strange to exclude women from this adventure, it does seem like quite the bargain.

From the Green Bay Area United Way's Community Connections....

Canoe & Wilderness Camp - Opportunity for Men

The Wisconsin Chapter of Sierra Club offers trips into the International Boundary Waters Wilderness Area including Quetico Provincial Park.

Ontario Canada's Quetico Provincial Park offers one of the world's truly unique and premier canoeing experiences.  Share your spirit of adventure and love of nature’s wonders with new friends by paddling, portaging and camping in this pristine wilderness.  Expect to see wildlife that voyageurs, trappers and ancient Ojibway saw as you travel the same waterways they traversed centuries ago.  Learn the history of how this storied wilderness came to be as you revel in its clear, drinkable waters, star-lit skies and deafening silence.  Layover days planned for swimming, photography, fishing, hiking, exploring or just plain relaxing.

No experience is required, but you will find a good attitude and physical fitness essential.

August 24 - Sept. 2, 2013 (9 days, 8 nights). Trip leader:  Bill Mathias, 920-339-0437wj.mathias@gmail.comCost: $600. Inquiry deadline June 5th. Application process required.

Green Bay's newest hot dog spot

Pat's Grand Opening in Time for Summer Hot Dog Season

Pat’s (227 N. Washington St.) will host an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 31 at 11:30 a.m.followed by a public grand opening event on Saturday, June 1 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The ribbon cutting event will include comments by owner Pat Reetz, City of Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt and Downtown Green Bay, Inc. and Olde Main Street, Inc. Executive Director Jeff Mirkes. Lunch specials will follow the event. The Saturday grand opening party will feature free “Dirty Dogs” with any lunch combo purchase and music from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. by the Sugar Bush Boys. The “Dirty Dog” is a hot dog with dill pickle spears topped with chocolate sauce.

The business is quickly becoming Green Bay’s best “hot dog” spot. They have 14 different hot dog options on the menu along with a long list of sandwiches, soups sides and bakery items. They have plans to participate in Nicolet Bank’s Dine the Deck series this summer as well as provide boater-friendly services to attract those docking at CityDeck this summer. They have also played a role in many charitable causes; including daily donations to St. John’s Homeless Shelter. Pat’s currently employs 8 people.

Pat’s is owned by entrepreneur and hot dog lover Pat Reetz. Reetz envisioned opening a restaurant about 5 years ago when he was working construction and always looking for a good hot dog. “We believe our unique product mix, friendly atmosphere and location in the heart of Downtown Green Bay will solidify us as a must-stop eatery. We see a large range of customers from construction workers to professionals to kids visiting the Children’s Museum. Our quick yet tasty options attract a wide demographic downtown.”

For more information about Pat’s, contact Pat Reetz at 920.676.5364 or e-mail reetzbits@yahoo.com

Get ready for fruits and veggies!

Due to the late growing season, my husband and I are just getting our seeds planted and garden roto-tilled this weekend. It's going to take awhile for our plants to grow and produce a harvest. However, I'm feeling more and more that is time for FRESH fruits and veggies to adorn my dining room table. I'm SO excited that the farmer's markets are starting. Check out this information about the Broadway Farmer's Market in Green Bay.

Farmers’ Market on Broadway Starts June 5th
It’s time to kick off summer with the Tenth Annual BayCare Clinic Farmers’ Market on Broadway (FMOB) startingWednesday, June 5, 2013. With nearly 200 vendors lining the downtown streets of the Broadway District, between Walnut and Dousman Streets, the Farmers’ Market on Broadway is bigger than ever!  The FMOB vendors offer a wide variety of products, ranging from fresh, locally grown produce to crafts and specialty goods. Enjoy live music while strolling through an eclectic mix of booths, including unique Broadway businesses.  Have a delicious meal at one of the many prepared-food vendors, stop in at one of Broadway’s outstanding restaurants or enjoy beverages from local brewers and vintners. The Market runs every Wed. beginning June 5st through October 16th. Get ready for a summer filled with free entertainment and unique shopping experiences.
Keeping it on the Street! Broadway will be closed every Wednesday between Walnut and Dousman Streets. Vendors face the middle of Broadway. The sidewalks will be open for patrons of the market to walk, as well as having the opportunity to visit Broadway stores more easily.
Where Can I Park? Free parking is available at various Downtown Parking Ramps, Leicht Park, Larsen Green, and the Green Bay Public School District lots. BMO Harris Bank will be open after 5:30 p.m. The owners of the lot behind Hinterland Brewery will be charging a $3 parking fee.
Entertainment! The BMO Harris Main Stage musical line-up for the market has been set, and includes some regular favorites as well as a few new acts. Nicki Sims starts the year out on June 5, followed by Erin Krebs on June 12, and some great performances by John Lambert, Randy Bruce, Rob Anthony, and many more popular performing artists. The BMO Harris North Stage will feature Hooked on Hooping, hula hooping to the music. For a complete listing, please visitwww.farmersmarketonbroadway.com
Refreshments! Visit the Farmers’ Market On Broadway’s expanded Beverage Booth for some refreshments, including water, soda, and microbrews from Titletown Brewing Co., Hinterland and other choices, along with wines from Von Stiehl and Captain’s Walk Winery.
Shopping! Local businesses in the Broadway District will be open late to allow for the ultimate downtown shopping experience.
The Farmers Market on Broadway is always supporting healthy living, diversity, arts, and culture.

Summertime is here!

Even with our extended winter, it's hard to believe that this weekend is already Memorial Day Weekend. True, the big "Kickoff to Summer" is a bit early this year but even so, it feels like we just got rid of our last snowbanks.
The last few days have been absolutely gorgeous in the Green Bay area with highs in the 70's and 80's. The lilacs, apple trees and cherry trees are in peak bloom. Backyard lawns are growing quicker than they can be mowed and my personal gauge of summer has started. The De Pere Police put up "no parking" signs on one side of our street.

De Pere, Wisconsin

You see, our house is just blocks away from the biggest Memorial Day Weekend party in Northeast Wisconsin- Celebrate De Pere.
Celebrate De Pere takes place Saturday through Monday in Voyageur Park in East De Pere. Tickets are $5 per day per person if bought BEFORE 7 pm. (After that, they are $10. ) Veteran? Get in absolutely free.
It is a fantastic community event filled with games, rides, delicious food, music, fireworks, a Redneck Regatta, a family fishing tournament, patriotism and great community pride. Throughout the weekend, partiers, families with kids in tow, and parade goers fill in parking spaces on our street and file past our porch. We can see the fireworks over the trees from our back balcony and hear the music rockin' all weekend long. In the last few years, we've tended to stay close to home for the great people-watching and to guard our house from raucous revelers.
Celebrate De Pere is just the first in a long line of events taking place in Northeast Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula throughout the summer. Great Lakes Clipper will keep you informed of these throughout the season but I thought you'd like to see my Summer Fun To-do List. I'll write more about each of these items in future postings.

Shop and rock out in the Central U.P. on June 1

When I was in the U.P. this weekend, I learned of some fun and inexpensive events coming up on Saturday, June 1.
First off, the Gwinn Sawyer Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting it's 16th annual Town Wide Rummage Sale beginning at 9 a.m. You can pick up the map of homes participating at Peter Nordeen Park in downtown Gwinn from 9- 11 am. Times for each sale vary. Refer to the Action Shopper for a complete list. Local food establishments will have special deals on everything from sauerkraut to pizza to baked goods.
Once you've snagged deals all morning/afternoon and your tummy is full of treats, work it off at the Fuel concert. Fuel will be at the Munising Ice Arena on June 1 at 8 p.m. Fuel has sold over 3.5 million albums in the U.S. You may know their songs "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)", "Shimmer" and "Innocent". Tickets are only $18. Purchase them at http://mudfest.ticketleap.com/fuel/#

Off the grid

I just wanted to apologize for not writing in the last few days. I was "off the grid" on vacation in the U.P. Lots of rest and relaxation. The good news is that I've gathered a bunch of discounts for Yooper savers in the next few days. Stay tuned!

It's beginning to look a lot like Yard Sale Season!

Even though I'm extremely excited to go to our house in the U.P. this weekend, a little part of me is disappointed that I'll be missing all the great yard sales in the Green Bay area.
This weekend is the Cellcom Marathon. That usually means one thing in my non-marathoner world: the Astor Park Neighborhood Rummage Sale.
Check out the following site for all of the great yard/garage/rummage sales in Brown County: https://www.facebook.com/rummagesale

For those of us who will be having a glorious weekend in the U.P., check out these sites:

One of those "Marquette summertime days"

I took a short walk in the sunshine to another building on the St. Norbert College campus today and couldn't help from reminicing about similar walks I took as a student on the NMU campus in Marquette.
It's a gorgeous day in early May. Students are scurrying around with finals on their minds while a light breeze blows in off the lake. Seventy- degree temperatures warm the sidewalk below my feet, seagulls laugh and the bright baby-green grass clashes with the blueness of the sky.
I can remember what it was like to have the promise of an entire college summer ahead of me. Sure, there were summer internships to go to and summer classes to take but the thought of living in Marquette in the summertime was a precious gift.
Marquette summers were filled with hikes up Sugarloaf or to Dead River Falls (running into ten people you know on the way), sunbathing at Picnic Rocks, shopping at Art on the Rocks and staying out until the wee hours at the Shamrock and My Place. My roommate and I lived just off of Third Street where we could walk to Frosty Treats and still be within earshot of our porch. Although I was not always a fan, Kid Rock's song "summertime in Northern Michigan" captures the true essence a carefree Marquette summer day. There was no place I would have rather been during my college years.
Fifteen years later, I get a small doses of that feeling on daytrips to Marquette or on days like today- where the sun is shining and magic is in the air.
