Two hidden gems in Esky

During the U.P. State Fair, I discovered two hidden gems in Escanaba. The first, the Antique Village and Agricultural Museum,  is located on the U.P. State Fairgrounds on US 2 in Escanaba. I’ve driven past at least a hundred times and didn’t even know that it existed. It’s tucked back in the western corner of the fairgrounds. If fair-goers are so distracted by the rides, carnival games and food, they might miss it. This little-known attraction is operated by the U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association.
The Agricultural Museum houses a collection of artifacts and antique equipment of Escanaba’s farming heritage. This includes a rare side-shaft 15 HP Badger Engine. There is no admission fee, although a freewill donation is appreciated. The Museum is open Tuesdays and Thursdays May 15- September 15 and by appointment. Group tours are available.
The Antique Village is very quaint and serves as an oasis of sorts from the cacophony of funnel cakes, oversized stuffed animals and Ferris wheels just a few yards away. Here, local artisans demonstrate traditional handicrafts such as candle making, carving, pottery, spinning and weaving. It also features a 80-ton diesel engine, a working steam-powered  sawmills, blacksmith shop, miniature train depot, granary, barbershop, cook shack, ice cream parlor, and my favorite, a general store.
The general store is run by a very friendly lady who took the time to show me and my husband some of the antiques on-hand that were not for sale, such as an old-time egg incubator now used as a shelving unit. They also had old-fashioned candies, baked goods, metal signs, kitchen gadgets and gifts made of wood.  I was able to purchase some 1980s “Best of the Fair” cookbooks for only a dollar for two.
The day I visited my time was very limited but I was also very intrigued by the Cook Shack. It was serving Wild Rice soup, a far cry from the greasy, not so healthy food so readily available elsewhere at the Fairgrounds.
The Village is open during Fair week (the third week in August), during the U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association’s annual show (every Labor Day weekend) and during the first weekend in December for their Christmas in the Village event.
Still looking to do something over Labor Day weekend in Esky? Check out the U.P. Steam and Gas Engine’s Association Annual Show. It features a flea market, a knife/gun show, and over 100 exhibitors displaying a wide variety of equipment.
For more information, click here. (www.upsteamandgasengine.org)

The second hidden gem at the Fairgrounds is the DNR’s Pocket Park. This is located on the Eastern side of the Fairgrounds near the Textiles building. It has been around since 2005 and features a fishing pond (shaped like the U.P.), set up with fishing poles for the kids; a replica lighthouse; an archery range and a pellet gun range. It also has displays about native plants and information about Michigan wildlife.  It is absolutely FREE (except for the price of bait if you choose to fish). The Pocket Park is open throughout the summer, from Memorial Day to Labor Day so there is still a bit of time to try your hand at catching a fish or hitting a bull’s eye.

Back to campus

Back to campus

Thursday was Move In Day for freshmen at St. Norbert College in De Pere. This is the when nervous and excited 17 and 18 year olds arrive on college campuses around the country with even more nervous and exited moms and dads in tow to help move the boxes of stuffed animals, cookware, clothes, beds in bags and school supplies.
I remember that day well even though it was (OMG) eighteen years ago. We arrived with my U-Haul of stuff that I had collected throughout the summer of 1995 to Van Antwerp Hall at NMU.  My “house” was an all-girls floor painted with cartoon characters in the hallway and stark white concrete block walls in my room. My mom and dad helped me make my bed with ivy patterned sheets and bedspread, put up my old theater posters from high school, then set up my microwave, electronic typewriter and hip clock radio.
I was an only child 700 miles away from home. It was a whole new (lonely) world for me. For four years my boy craziness had been limited due to attendance at an all-girls high school and here, I had boys, no scratch that, men, walking down the hallways without shirts. It was certainly an adjustment.
I did have a roommate who I met a few days later but never really meshed with. It could be that she never left the room after the first week of classes, or the fact that she always blasted Violent Femmes in the darkened room or the illegal hedgehog that she stored in our closet.  Eventually, I was able to embrace all that Northern had to offer. I started by joining hall government and choral society. I got a job at the newspaper and then in housing, dated a few guys, excelled at my studies and became a leader on campus, along the way forming my circle of friends and set of values that I have today.
I see the fresh-faced students of the Class of 2017 and their parents and have to say I’m a little envious. My college years were some of the best years of my life which couldn't be replicated. These freshmen have all of the tears, and joys, and growth experiences ahead of them. They have all of the same feelings of anxiety and change that I did but they never experienced a world without instantaneous access to information and communication (email and the Internet was a brand new phenomenon my freshman year of college). They arrive with laptops, tablets, SMART phones, Katy Perry posters, and chevron printed bed spreads. On the flip side, they will leave college four years (or more) from now with ever increasing student loan debt, more of a reliance on credit cards than even my generation had, and a need to find a job in a struggling economy.

A tip to the freshmen of the Fall of 2013: learn how to budget, save, and spend wisely. Take full advantage of the meal dollars in your dining plan. Limit your use of credit cards to create a collection of Coach purses or just to obtain airline miles. (Yup, I made both of those mistakes!) Be wise about the price of communicating with friends and family at home by taking advantage of email, unlimited cell phone coverage, and Skype. (My freshmen year, my long distance bill averaged $100 a month and I spent at least $10 a month on stamps for real letters. )  You will find that you don’t have to dine on ramen noodles, grilled cheese sandwiches and Spaghettio’s for four years. With minimal effort, you can use technology, your creativity and, of course, blogs like this one, to eat steak and of course, pizza, on a ramen noodle budget.

Match-ups are coming

I apologize for being slow on getting match-ups posted this week. They ARE coming- most likely tonight or tomorrow morning. It's been a crazy few days with being a vendor at the U.P. State Fair AND the school year starting. Yikes! Where does the time go?

Wild Blueberry Festival in Paradise

Paradise will be blue this weekend.

That is to say, Paradise, Michigan in the Eastern U.P. is celebrating the blueberry this Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the Wild Blueberry Festival.
Enjoy a Blueberry Brunch. Pick out some pies at the bake sale to practice for the Blueberry Pie Eating Contest. Listen to some great piano, dulcimer and storytellers. Ride on a wagon. Shop for arts and crafts, perhaps to get some ideas for Christmas gifts. Be entertained by magic, a clown and a ventriloquist. There is no admission charged. For a full schedule of events, see the website here.

Get out there this weekend

You may have noticed that this weekend is a virtual marketplace of huge events in both Green Bay and the U.P. So get out there! Enjoy a funnel cake. Witness the Miracle of Life. Plunder your way through the Fox River.  Tall ships, cows and Ferris wheels galore, oh my! These are all fantastic and relatively inexpensive family outings that can provide many laughs, memories and maybe even a little learning along the way.

Get artsy!

Tomorrow plan to go to Art On the Town in Downtown Appleton from 6 - 9 p.m. Park for FREE and revel in "Downtown Cool" when you board the trolley on Olde Oneida St. and travel to College Ave. There you can enjoy music, performing arts, visual arts and culinary arts from local artists and businesses. This weeks' theme is Paint On the Town. Visitors will have the opportunity to paint a masterpiece outside the Trout Museum of Art.
The next Art On the Town event will be September 20.

Also, don't forget to save the date for ArtStreet in Downtown Green Bay. That three-day event will be held August 23-25. There is FREE admission with dozens of vendors, music, food and information on local attractions and businesses.

Go Pack! for cheap

The Packers experience is priceless to many but does often carry a heavy burden to our wallets. Between transportation, parking, hotels, tickets, food, rental of seats and of course, Packers memorabilia, the costs can amount to hundreds of dollars for a half-day experience.
Here's some ways that you can cut out the expense of your season of Green N' Gold:

Tickets
Did you know that you can purchase tickets for face value or less than face value and help out local kids at the same time? That's right. The Green Bay area Boys and Girls Club receives ticket donations from season ticket holders and sells them as a fundraiser. And these aren't shabby seats either. They include regular seats, indoor club seats, outdoor club seats and seats in the brand new section. All money raised goes toward Club programming. Call 920-494-7090 ext. 1056 for more information.

Transportation
Go Green Bay Metro to get to the game. Every home game, the Green Bay Metro offers Fare Free rides on all Game Day Routes three hours before and three hours after the game. This is a fantastic way to not have to pay for that $20 or $25 parking spot and still get right up to the stadium.
Routes  include:
Cheesehead (Bay Park Mall area/ Oneida Casino)
QB Sneak (East Town Mall area to Lambeau)
Quick Slant (St. Norbert Campus in DePere to Lambeau)
Lambeau Leap (Downtown Green Bay to Lambeau)

Tailgating
Tailgating at home or in a parking lot but don't have a $64 million dollar player budget? Check out this site: http://www.myrecipes.com/holidays-and-occasions/tailgating-recipes/cheap-tailgating-recipes-10000001920988/

Tailgating near the stadium?
Check out one of these three options:
Tundra Tailgate Zone- in the east parking lot outside of the Oneida Nation gate of Lambeau. This climate controlled tent area has more than 15 big screens, live bands, alumni autographing sessions and FREE stuff giveaways. This is absolutely FREE whether you have a ticket or not. Food and beverages are for sale. This Zone opens up four hours prior to kickoff.

Bart Starr Plaza Tailgate Zone- in Bart Starr Plaza in front of the Resch Center. Enjoy all-you-can-eat hamburgers, brats, potato salad, chips, cheese curds, pickles, cookies, beer, red &white wine, and pop. It also includes one FREE vodka drink. All this for the price of $21 per adult and $15 per child. This opens three hours before the game. Tickets are for sale online or at the gate. My husband and I have done this as a Packer game ritual and loved it. The sheer amount of food fills us up enough to avoid or severely limit the over-priced stadium food during the game.

Brett Favre's Steakhouse Tailgate Party- at Brett Favre's Steakhouse. Enjoy unlimited food and beer. Food offerings include Sheboygan style brats, burgers, jambalaya, salads, cookies, beer, soda, and bloody Mary's. Musical entertainment is on hand. Need a souvenir for the game? They have those too. This event is $25 per adult and $15 per child. Doors open three hours before kickoff.

Celebrate your Yooperness

Tomorrow, August 10, will be the first-ever Official Yooper Day in Mattson Lower Harbor Park in Marquette. From 11 a.m.- 11 p.m., Yoopers and Wanna-be Yoopers will have the chance to "Show your U.P. Pride".
Starting with a march down to Lower Harbor at 11 a.m., this day is full of ways to participate. There will be a pasty-eating contest to determine who can eat the most pasties in 10 minutes. Sign your name on a 60 x 30 foot silhouette of the Upper Peninsula. Kids can enjoy bouncy houses, face painting and pictures with Yoopy, the official Yooper Day mascot. Chow down on a food tour of the U.P. and learn about the home-grown U.P. "suds".  Learn about U.P. history and culture through presentations. Take in some live entertainment until well into the night. Marquette Harbor Cruises will have additional cruises available from Lower Harbor. The York Cruise Ship will also arrive in Lower Harbor.
For more information, check out www.officialyooperday.com.

RC Air Show and Corn Roast

Looking for a great family event?
Check out the Green Bay Model Airplane Club's Air Show and Corn Roast this weekend. Kids can build their own gliders, play in the bouncy house and watch the northern Aces Air Show.
The event will be held at Nicolet Airport, off Humboldt Road in east Green Bay.
I've been seeing signs everywhere for this event, and wow, is my husband excited to go. In Brian-land, there's nothing better than RC airplanes and food in one place.
Thanks to my friend, Julie, for reminding me about it.

Cheap Eat'n

If you are like most moms and dads, every once in awhile you are on burn-out mode when it comes to cooking. This is especially true on long, hot summer days when walking into the kitchen and turning on the stove seems like too much of a chore. And restaurants are fun, but the price mounts up quickly when you have kids. Enter the "Kids Eat FREE" slogan into your vocabulary. You can pretty much feed those munchkins for FREE every day of the week if you know where to go.

As someone who doesn't have kids yet, I'm always surprised, and a little jealous, by how many restaurants have this promotion. This list certainly could come in handy whether it is just another Tuesday that you don't feel like cooking or if you are planning travels to a nearby town.

Cheap Eat'n: Golden Basket

Every time I walk into this week's Cheap Eat'n restaurant pick, I feel like I'm at home. I am greeted by a warm smile and hello from the friendly and hard-working manager, Gus.
I've been going to Green Bay's location of Golden Basket on Military Ave. since I moved to the area ten years ago. My husband's family has been going there since it opened in the early 1990s. Why do we and so many others (the parking lot is always full) return time after time? Great service, delicious food, a clean, an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere and CHEAP prices.
Golden Basket, by far, has the best soup in town. This East Sider will  go ALL the way over to the West Side (shudder the thought) just for a bowl of chicken noodle. They have Greek, Mexican, Chinese, breakfast, sandwiches, salads and traditional family restaurant foods like broasted chicken, pork chops and meat loaf all day long. You can tell that the food is home-cooked.
The menu reads like War and Peace... it seems like they serve everything under the sun. The daily specials include a bread basket, salad or soup, entree (won't leave you hungry) and a dessert choice for less than $8.
Golden Basket was renovated in 2010, giving it a open, bright, airy-feel without being pretentious.
The location is fantastic too. In town for a Packer game? Golden Basket is just blocks away from Lambeau Field. Do you live in the Fox Cities? There's a Golden Basket on Richmond St. in Appleton.
