U.P. Fall Festivals and Events

Fall has always been my favorite time of year. Besides the fact that I'm an autumnal baby and my anniversary is in September, I simply love this time of year. The crunch and smell of new fallen leaves. Breaking out the sweaters and brown, greens, and oranges from the depths of my closet. The sweetness of apples, saltiness of roasted pumpkin seeds and comfort of a Crock Pot dinner. And of course, tailgating and looking forward to Halloween. Those are all reasons to celebrate fall. I've rounded up a few more ways to celebrate the season in the Upper Peninsula below. Enjoy!

Every year it draws thousands of people from the surrounding community for music, food and fun. It promises to be one exciting event and there’s no better time to experience the very best of what St. Norbert has to offer. (Did we mention that this year you can tour the campus by Segway?)

Check out the full line-up of events by clicking on this link: http://www.snc.edu/sncday/

Gordman's coming to Green Bay

Besides being my 7th wedding anniversary, next Thursday, September 19 is a very special day in the Green Bay retail world.
Gordman's opens that day!
Located at the corner of Holmgren and Cormier, near Ashley Furniture, the Nebraska-based Gordman's is a budget-conscious shopper's paradise, featuring everything from clothing to home decor.
The store will open at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Are you ready for some Green Bay football?

Here's some information from Downtown Green Bay, Inc. to plan the rest of your Packer Home Opener weekend.

Fans may flock to Lambeau on Sunday, but area businesses and organizations planned a weekend of activities in downtown Green Bay hoping to draw thousands of visitors to the city center. The lineup includes the Packers Heritage Trail Plaza dedication and subsequent tours, a Green and Golden Car Show and CityDeck Tailgate among others.
Visitors will be able to park free in all city ramps and lots Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the festivities. The full lineup and details include:
•           Packers Heritage Trail Plaza Unveiling: The public is invited to the plaza grand unveiling on the northeast corner of Washington and Cherry Streets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday featuring many special guests including Pro Football and Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer Paul Hornung. Coordinated by Packers Heritage Trail Foundation, Inc.
•           Packers Heritage Trail Mini Trolley Tours: Take a mini tour of the Packers Heritage Trail (45 min) at 12 p.m. or 3 p.m. Saturdayfor only $15 (plus receive a $5 voucher for a full tour). •           1st Annual Green & Golden Car Show: Head to the Adams Street Lot from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday to enjoy around 20 green and gold vehicles sure to get visitors pumped for game day. Coordinated by Chris Wood.
•           CityDeck Tailgate: Head to the Main Stage at CityDeck from 3 - 9:15 p.m. Saturday for music by Kung Fu Stereo and Whiskey Ditch, merchandise vendors, tailgate food, beer, wine and more. Zumba Day by the Bay participants will be able to shuttle to and from downtown. Event coordinated by the Current Young Professionals Network and Hagemeister Park.
•           Badgers on the Big Screen: Catch the Wisconsin vs. Arizona State game on a blowup screen on the Hagemeister Park Patio at 9:30 p.m. Saturday night.
•           Game Day Busing: On Sunday, the public is reminded about free Green Bay Metro game day busing with a number of routes including several downtown stops.

Cheap Eat'n: The Drift Inn

The Drift Inn in Green Bay is my latest pick for the Cheap Eat'n section. For years, I traveled past it in the heart of the industrial area on Ashland Ave., intrigued but cautiously so. The location, plain-looking sign and building facade made me think "dive bar". There always seemed to be cars in the parking lot but I hadn't heard any one talk about it. Then one day I happened to ask my friend, Linda, a De Pere native, about it. "Sure, I've eaten there plenty of times.. they have the best chili," she said. Little did I know how my chili snobbery (I'm originally from Cincinnati, the chili capitol of the world) would be turned upside down after my first bite of the Drift Inn's chili.
The Drift Inn would be the perfect addition to Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-in's and Dives TV show. It is a true diamond in the rough. Simple exterior. Simple interior but extremely clean. The service is quick and friendly. It is a bar, but so much more- a true Green Bay Packer fan's paradise with 1997 vintage green walled- Lambeau picture prominently displayed.
The menu is not very extensive but what is served is FANTASTIC. The chili is amazing- the perfect blend of spicy, meaty and spaghetti-laden goodness. The burgers are heaven-sent.  The fries are hot and crispy, right out of the fryer. My Green Bay-bred husband swears by the brat burger. The FREE popcorn from the machine is some of the best I've ever tasted.
Did I mention that the Drift Inn is inexpensive? A large chili is less than $4. Most sandwiches run below $5. Portions are pretty big, even by Green Bay standards.
It is the perfect Packer's tailgating location, with one minor detail. It is closed on Sundays. Never fear though. If you are craving the chili, you can save the day at that Sunday tailgate party by purchasing the Drift Inn's secret chili spice mix before hand and combine it with your own meat.
