Free or cheap events around N.E. Wisconsin this weekend

There's seemingly something to do for everyone this weekend in Northeast Wisconsin.

Like free music?
Tomorrow, June 8, Summer in the Park will feature Mariachi Estrella on Jackson Square (Monroe Ave., Green Bay) from 11:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. FREE

Like classic cars?
On Sunday, get yourself to Allouezfest Precious Metals Car Show and Swap Meet from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. in Green Isle Park in Green Bay. In addition to a park full of cool, classic cars, the event will feature food and refreshment, a live DJ, kids games and inflatables. FREE

Like summer festivals?
Head north to Oconto for Copperfest all weekend. The event runs 5 p.m.- 11:30 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m- midnight on Saturday; and 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Sunday at Ner-Park (Arbutus Ave. and Madison Street). There is a $2 admission on Friday, $3 on Saturday and $1 on Sunday. The festival features a parade and fireworks.

Like plants and animals?
The Green Bay Animal Rescue group is holding a plant sale this Saturday at the home of Denise Markowski at 134 Cliffview Drive in Green Bay from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. There are 300 plants ready to sell. Also, some of the rescue group's foster dogs will make an appearance. Get your garden looking good and support a great cause.

Like watching others run or sprinting yourself?
This Saturday is the Bellin Run. Catch glimpses of your favorite runners as they wind their way through Green Bay to the finish line.

 

 

Mackinac Island blossoms and buffets

While the U.P. can't claim Mackinac Island entirely for its own, the Island is close and has enough U.P. ties to be considered part of the Yooper family. If you've been there, you know the Island's charms of horses, the Grand Hotel and the world-famous fudge shops. This time of year though, the Island's biggest attraction is one that is more fragrant than the horses, a lot less expensive than the Grand Hotel and doesn't pack on the pounds like the fudge- it is the Mackinac Island Lilac Festival. Mackinac's lilac collection begin in 1949 to co-incide with a great horse drawn parade. What began as a one-day event now spans 10 days and it starts this Friday. From June 7- 16, the festival draws visitors from all around the world for island tours, art exhibitions by local painters, buffets and afternoon teas at the Grand Hotel, wine tasting, musical entertainment, hayrides, a 10K run, shoreline cruises, the Lilac Festival Grande Parade and much more.
If you are a foodie, perhaps you'd be interested in the 27th Annual A Taste of Mackinac for only $15. It runs on Sat., June 15 from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. at the Harbor View Inn.
Or perhaps Dad would like to spend Sunday, June 16, Father's Day as a Captain for a Day. Shepler's will teach what it itakes to be a Captain on the Great Lakes with hands-on activities, such as, knot tying, navigation through charting and tours of the Pilot House and Engine room. You will also be treated to a short cruise of the harbor. The best part is that it is free! It will be held on the Sacre Bleu, docked at the end of Shepler's Mackinac Island Main Dock.

 

 

Waterboard Warriors

While the Waterboard Warriors Water Ski Show got washed out and cancelled last night, there are a lot of opportunities to see them throughout the summer.
Every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer (weather dependant), the Waterboard Warriors put on a free water ski show at Mueller Park in Wrightstown. This includes high speed barefoot water skiing, jumping and pyramids. Free shows begin at 7 p.m. in June and 6:30 p.m. in July and August. They also have a free Learn to Ski clinic at 6 p.m. on June 26 and August 12.

 

Larry's Piggly Wiggly and Original Austin's deals

I live pretty much smack dab between Larry's Piggly Wiggly and Austin's so they are nice and convenient for those "last minute items". I've heard people complain that both of these stores "are SO expensive" but I'm here to let you know that you CAN indeed get good deals at these stores. Besides, Austin's has one of the best meat departments in all of Northeastern Wisconsin and a pretty good deal on movie rentals- just a buck a night.

Just a few days ago, my husband, Brian, came home from Austin's with a fantastic deal. He bought THREE pounds of Oscar Mayer all-beef hot dogs for $3.99. (He was VERY proud of himself. Good job, honey!)

Free Fishing Weekend in Michigan

The U.P. can boast of over 1,700 miles of shoreline, 4,300 inland lakes and 12,000 miles of rivers and streams within its borders. This is the weekend to take advantage of all that water- and all those fish under the waves.
It is Michigan's annual Summer Free Fishing Weekend on June 8 and 9. During Free Fishing Weekend all license fees are waived for both Michigan residents and out-of-staters alike.
This weekend also features many free fishing events, especially for kids. For instance, the Richmond Township Community Club is holding its 25th Annual Fishing Derby in Negaunee on Saturday. This includes the derby itself, breakfast and lunch is provided and everyone who participates gets a $15 gift. Trophies will also be awarded for first, second and third place in different age categories. This is for kids ages 16 and under.
