Fizz, Boom, READ takes over Great Lakes region

When I was little, I was a voracious reader. As an only child, I quickly became friends with the likes of Ramona Quimby, the Sweet Valley twins, and Claudia, Mary Ann, Kristy, and Dawn of the Baby Sitter's Club books. In the summertime, my mom and I would go to the library up the street to load up on books because I went through one at least every other day.
This summer, libraries are making it easy to teach your kids the joy of reading through the Fizz, Boom, READ program.
At the Peter White Public Library in Marquette, Monday, June 16 marks the first day of the Fizz, Boom, READ program and it will run through August 8. Kids need to register, read and then check off the first ten days of reading in a log. They will then need to bring their log to the first book fair and pick out a FREE book. If they keep on reading, they can get a FREE book at the second book fair.
At the Brown County library, readers have until August 6 to read as much as they can and earn prizes along the way. Kids simply need to read and record their hours of reading.
Here's how it works. For every two hours spent reading, kids earn kid's meal coupons to area restaurants, a kid's pass to the National Railroad Museum or Green Bay Children's Museum, a blue ribbon pass for FREE admission to the Brown County Fair on August 14, and a one day student pass to Joannes Family Aquatic Center or Resch Aquatic Center. When they complete the program, they can pick out a new book or get 25 percent off a book at the Reader's Loft and a FREE pass to a special library event at the Neville Museum.
