Art on the Rocks

The last weekend of July was always one of my most favorite weekends of the year when I lived in Marquette.

There was one reason for that- Art on the Rocks.

This Saturday and Sunday, Marquette is showing it's "true colors" for the 55th year in a row. No longer located at Presque Isle, Art on the Rocks has been held at Mattson Lower Harbor Park for the last few years.

Despite the move, it still offers some of the best paintings, pottery, stained glass, metal works and photography in the country. It is more on the end of fine art, than crafts, as it is a juried show. There are 175 artists and more than 10,000 people are expected to peruse and purchase their wares.

For people like me, Art on the Rocks is more about getting ideas and dreaming about "when I win the lotto" than making large purchases.

Art on the Rocks runs from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday.

While you are in the artsy mode, don't forget about the Outback Art Fair. Just down Lakeshore Blvd. at Picnic Rocks, Outback is a little less "fine art" and more crafty. There's wood works, paintings, stained glass, food vendors, jewelery and fun "I really didn't need this, but it's really cool" kind of items.
