Cheap Eat'n: The Greenbrier Cafe', Aurora Baycare

Cheap Eat'n

Want to get ham, broccoli and cheddar quiche and a side of fruit for $3? Or maybe you'd like a Smoked Turkey sandwich with cranberry mayo on two slices of cranberry bread with a side of watermelon for $4. Those are just a few of the yummy items on the menu at The Greenbrier Cafe.

Okay, I'll admit it. You probably think I'm crazy for doing a restaurant review of a hospital cafeteria. Most people think of tasteless, sub-par food served in a dank basement filled with sick and sad people when thinking of hospital cafeterias. I know I always did. But this isn't just any hospital cafeteria.

The Greenbrier Cafe at Aurora Baycare Medical Center in Green Bay actually has a following outside of the typical hospital staff/visitor clientele. Students from nearby Preble High School flock at lunchtime to chow down on The Greenbrier's tasty burgers, wraps and fries. Groups of businessmen enjoy sandwiches outside on the patio while taking advantage of the free WiFi. Families gather alongside doctors and nurses to snack on delicious desserts.
Besides a considerable number of people dressed in scrubs, you don't even realize you are in a hospital. The atmosphere is light and airy. There is a separate entrance for the cafeteria so you don't have to worry about hospital parking or walking through long hallways.
The Greenbrier opens daily at 7 a.m. and is open until 6:30 p.m. and then again from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. They serve a main entree each day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A grill and sandwich station is open throughout the day. They also have a great soup and salad bar, dessert bar, and a wide variety of beverages.
As my husband has (unfortunately) spent a lot of quality time on the medical side of the hospital in the last several years, I've eaten in the Greenbrier quite a bit. The subs and sandwiches are great and inexpensive. My favorite thing to get is a large ham, turkey and cheese croissant with chopped cukes and shredded carrots for only $3. The soups taste homemade. The salad bar is fresh and has a ton of variety. They also have really good cauliflower bites, chicken strips and cheese curds. Breakfast is yummy with scrambled eggs by the scoopful, bacon ,sausage, and hash browns.
